What are some energy-saving tips I can use with my AC unit?

There are a few things you can do to save energy when using your air conditioner:

  • Set the thermostat to 73-78 degrees when you’re home and 85 degrees or higher when you’re away.
  • Use fans to circulate air and create a comfortable environment.
  • Close doors and windows to keep cool air inside.
  • Install window shades or blinds to block out sunlight.
Finally, invest in an energy-efficient AC unit.

What are some common problems with AC units?

As air conditioners age, some common problems develop, including:•The unit isn’t cooling the room properly.
•The unit is making strange noises.
•The unit is leaking water.
If you’re experiencing any of these problems, call us at 954-864-3725, and we will diagnose the cause and repair it. However, if the problems are severe, we will provide a quote for repair or replacement. Attempting to fix the problem yourself could void your warranty.

How can I prevent my AC unit from breaking down?

There are a few things you can do to help prevent your AC unit from breaking down:

  • Have your AC serviced once a year using our Tune-up Special
  • Clean or replace the filter regularly – see your manufacturer instructions
  • Keep the area around the unit clean and free of debris
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and care

What are the different types of AC units?

There are several different types of air conditioners, including:

  • Window units: These are the most common type of AC unit. They’re installed in a window and cool a single room or small space.
  • Portable units: Portable AC units can be moved from room to room and are ideal for small spaces or rooms without a window.
  • Central AC units: Central air conditioners cool the entire home and are usually installed as part of a heating and cooling system.
  • Mini-split units: Consist of an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. Their ductless design provides flexible and compact installations.

What does a heat pump do?

Like an air conditioner, it can cool your home, but it’s also capable of providing heat. In cooler months, a heat pump pulls heat from the cold outdoor air and transfers it indoors, and in warmer months, it pulls heat out of indoor air to cool your home. To learn more details read our article about Heat Pumps.

How does air conditioning work?

Air conditioning works by using a refrigerant to cool the air inside a home or building. The refrigerant is compressed and then circulated through a series of coils. As the refrigerant passes through the coils, it absorbs heat from the air, cooling it down. The cooled air is then circulated back into the room.

What is HVAC?

HVAC stands for “heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.” HVAC systems control the temperature and humidity inside of a space. They are often used in commercial buildings and homes.

What are the benefits of using an air conditioner?

Air conditioners can improve the air quality inside a home or building by filtering out dust and other airborne particles. They can also help to reduce noise pollution. Also, air conditioners can help maintain a consistent temperature, which is beneficial for people with allergies or respiratory problems.

What is the best temperature to set for an air conditioner?

Most people find that a temperature of around 72 degrees Fahrenheit is comfortable. However, this varies depending on individual preferences.

What are some tips for using an air conditioner efficiently?

Some tips for using an air conditioner efficiently include:

  • Only use the air conditioner when necessary
  • Set the temperature at a comfortable level
  • Using fans in conjunction with the air conditioner for better circulation
  • Seal windows and doors to prevent warm air from entering
  • Perform regular maintenance and cleaning of the air conditioner unit

What is the best time of year to buy an air conditioner?

When it is clear your existing unit is no longer efficient. Visit our AC Repair page to learn more about signs your air conditioning system needs to be replaced.

How do I know if my air conditioner is leaking water?

Water pooling around your air conditioner unit is a sign of leaking. Leaking could be due to a clogged condensate drain line or a problem with the evaporator coils. If you suspect your AC unit is leaking, it’s best to contact us at 954-864-3725 for diagnosis and repair.

Why won’t my air conditioner turn on?

There are a few possible reasons your air conditioner won’t turn on. First, it could be due to a power outage, a tripped circuit breaker, or a blown fuse. Alternatively, the problem could be with the AC unit, such as a faulty thermostat or compressor. If you’re unsure of the cause, it’s best to contact us at 954-864-3725 for professional AC assistance.

Can I install a window air conditioner myself?

Installing a window air conditioner unit isn’t a difficult task. Still, it’s always best to consult a professional before undertaking any major home improvement project. In general, you’ll need to measure the window opening, purchase an AC unit that fits the space, and then follow the instructions included with the unit for installation.

How many BTUs do I need?

The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a measure of heat. When choosing an AC unit, you’ll want to select one that has enough BTUs to cool the space you’re trying to cool. A general rule is that you’ll need about 20 BTUs per square foot. Learn more about air conditioner sizes and types on our AC Replacement page.

Should I get a portable or window AC unit?

The type of AC unit you choose will depend on your needs and preferences. Portable units are ideal for small spaces or rooms that don’t have windows. In contrast, window units are more permanent and can cool more extensive areas. Neither types of air conditioning are as effective as central AC or mini splits.

Q

Call Prime Time Cooling at 954-864-3725 for answers to all your AC questions.

What should I do if my AC unit isn’t working efficiently?

If your air conditioner isn’t working correctly, you should first check the power. Then, be sure the unit is plugged in and the circuit breaker isn’t tripped. And if the unit is still not working, consult your owner’s manual or call a professional for repairs.

Should I use a programmable thermostat with my AC unit?

Most newer air conditioners have a programmable thermostat which can be a great way to save energy and money on your energy bill. You can set the thermostat to turn off when you’re away from home or asleep and turn it on before you need it. A programmable thermostat can help to save on energy costs and prevent your AC unit from working overtime.

Do I need to have my ducts cleaned?

Duct cleaning is not always necessary, but it can be beneficial if your ducts are significantly dirty or damaged. If you’re considering cleaning your ducts, call us at 954-864-3725 to ensure it’s done correctly.

Can I clean my AC unit myself?

It’s generally not recommended to clean your air conditioner, as this could void your warranty. If you choose to clean your unit, unplug it first and consult your owner’s manual for instructions.

How often should I change my air filter?

It’s typically recommended that you change your air filter every few months, but this will vary depending on the type of filter you have and the conditions in your home. For example, if you have pets or live in a dusty area, you may need to change your filter more frequently.

Does turning off my AC save money?

It depends! If you’re gone for more than four hours during the day, turning off your AC unit is generally more efficient. However, if you have pets or plants at home, you’ll want to leave them on to keep them comfortable. Use your best judgment and consult with an HVAC professional if you’re unsure.

What’s the difference between central air and a window unit?

There are a few differences between central air and a window unit. Central air is generally more expensive to install, but it will cool your entire home rather than just one room. Window units are less expensive but can be a bit of an eyesore. Central air is also generally more energy-efficient.

What is the best HVAC system for a small home?

There are a lot of factors to consider when determining the best HVAC system for your home. The size of your home, the climate you live in, and your budget are all considerations.

For a small home, a mini-split system may be the best option. Mini split systems are very efficient and can be easily installed in small spaces. They are also relatively affordable, making them a good option for budget-conscious homeowners.

What is the best HVAC system for a large home?

A central air conditioning system is typically the best option for a large home. Central AC systems are very efficient and can cool large spaces quickly and evenly. Because central air is relatively expensive compared to window units, we have 100% financing available.

Is using a fan instead of an AC unit efficient enough to cool my home?

Fans are a great way to circulate air and create a comfortable environment. Still, they won’t lower the temperature in a room. For that, you’ll need an air conditioner. However, using a fan and an air conditioning system can save energy costs and improve air circulation.

What is the best way to clean my air conditioner’s filter?

Cleaning your air conditioner’s filter is vital to keep it running efficiently. Most filters can be washed with soap and water. Still, you may need to replace it if it’s significantly damaged. Check your owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to clean or replace your AC unit’s filter.

When should I have my air conditioner serviced?

Generally, it’s recommended to have your air conditioner serviced once a year before the start of summer in Florida. Yearly service will help ensure it’s running efficiently and won’t break down when you need it most. Visit our section about AC Maintenance recommendations.

How much does an AC unit cost to run?

On average, the electricity cost for air conditioning is between 10¢ and 88¢ per hour with a small window AC unit costing 10¢ per hour to run.

How do I know if my HVAC system needs to be replaced?

If your HVAC system is more than ten years old, it may be time to start thinking about replacing it. Older systems are less efficient and can break down more often. Also, suppose you’ve noticed your energy bills increasing, or your home isn’t as comfortable as it used to be. In that case, it’s time to talk to a professional about replacing your HVAC system. For help with that decision, review our recommendations about AC repair vs. replacement.

What are the pros and cons of mini-split systems?

Mini split systems are very efficient and can be easily installed in small spaces. They are also relatively affordable, making them a good option for budget-conscious homeowners. However, the downside of mini-split systems is that they can be noisy and require more maintenance than central air.

My house is always too hot even with AC, what can I do about it?

If your home is always too hot, you can do a few things to improve the situation. First, ensure that all your windows and doors are properly sealed. Sealing will help to keep the hot air out. Second, you can try adding insulation to your attic. If these haven’t solved the problem, you may need to upgrade your HVAC system to a more powerful one. Finally, review our recommendations about AC replacements.

4/2017 Excellent! I found these guys through the Thumbtack webpage. They were the first to respond and answered all my questions almost immediately including pricing. They showed up exactly at the time scheduled, worked fast, professionally and explained each step of the way. Needless to say, I highly recommend them. 8/27/21 The blower motor module broke and the entire motor needed replacement. I only had to wait for the warranty replacement to arrive. As usual, the service was fast, professional and reasonable pricing. What more can you ask for? These guys are A+. 11/4/22 Another visit.. and as usual, on time and very professional. Issue resolved. 8/5/2025 A+ 5 Star service in Fort Lauderdale. Compressor blown. Same as usual, I placed the call to these guys, they showed up as scheduled, worked professionally (IN INCLEMENT WEATHER I might add) and got the issue resolved promptly. 6/22/26 Called them for service but I later canceled because we were able to resolve the issue ourselves. Nevertheless and as usual, Prime Time answered and was ready to assist the very next day. Thank you!
